The Gulf of Guinea, given its distance from any oceanographic institute, was little studied during the last 19th century. Vessels such as the "Travailleur" (1880-1882), the "Talisman" (1883) and those of Prince Albert I of Monaco, the "Princesse Alice 1" (1894-1897), the "Princesse Alice II" (1901-1904) and the "Hirondelle II"(1911-1914), which all carried out expeditions in African waters, never ventured further south than Dakar and the Cape Verde Islands. During this same period, an English vessel, the "Buccaneer" (1885-1888) carried out the first expedition in the Gulf of Guinea....
